Becoming a Bartender: schooling?

I'm interested in working as a Bartender on the side for the remainder of my Bachelor's. I figured I would have to take a course or get a certificate, but a friend of mine who was a Bartender for 10 years said manager's don't care about that kind of thing and only care about how personable and friendly you are. Does anyone know what being a Bartender entails?
